I’m Moving to Different Virtual Address

I’ve tried to figure out different ways to do things with the EtzlerHousehold.net namespace. Having this blog attached to it has limited the things that I’m able to do. So starting today Etz’s View of the World will be available at www.andyetzler.net. I will be forwarding the old www.etzlerhousehold.net to this new address for a while, but you may want to update your rss reader or favorites.

Trying New Technology

This week I won an iPad for filing out a survey on ittoolbox. They shipped it quickly and I received it yesterday. Last night was our first district football game (beat Brookfield 50-45), so this morning is the first time I’ve really had to look at it.

First impressions? Well, it’s cool! I mean it is really cool! I can see why people have spoken so highly of it. The keyboard is a bit awkward to type on, but it’s doable. In fact this post is being typed on the iPad now. It’s certainly a lot easier to type on then iPhone.

Some of the nicer things are that it’s a nice platform to watch NetFlix and Hulu videos on. Surfing the Internet is nice as well. I have to say that the Kindle app is nice. That all being said, I wouldn’t have shelled out the $629 for it, but since I don’t have to I think I’ll keep it!

Do Pastor’s Dream of Electric Sheep?

There’s a new blog out there that I have been asked to help with. It is called Do Pastor’s Dream of Electric Sheep. I know, for those of you who know me, how can I add an additional item to my list of things to do? Well, I don’t know for sure how much I’ll be able to  help with it, but I hope to add my unique view as a worker/priest to the topics that will be discussed.

So what will be discussed? Well, technology and how it can enhance a pastor’s work. It just started today and will transform many different times I’m sure. So if you’re into technology and how it can help promote the Gospel, or even help in your personal studies of Scripture, take a look and check back often. You  may even see me post there from time to time. :)

iPhone Toys

Today I received an iPhone from work. Needless to say, I’ve been playing with it all evening. This post is even from it. I have to say, I probably won’t use it to post very often, it can be a bit tedious with the typing. In fact, I’ll have another post in a few days to let you know how things are going with it. Inthe mean time, what apps do you recomend?

DNS Makes the World Go Round

At least when it’s working. If you don’t know what DNS (Dynamic Name System) is what makes the Internet work, or not in my case. When you type in something like www.yahoo.com, your computer doesn’t know what that means. It only deals in ones and zeros. So it goes out to the Internet and to an elaborate system of DNS servers. They translate it into numbers so that www.yahoo.com becomes  209.191.93.52, and then it knows where to go.

Setting up DNS can be a pain, and I’m going through some of that pain right now. Every change you make must replicate, which can take hours to days. Hopefully you’ll be reading this soon. If not, it may be a long afternoon.

Moving Back To WordPress

I’m beginning to migrate my blogs back to WordPress. I’ll be able to save a bit of money for myself and the church. In these times, it’s something you have to do. I hope to be a bit more active on this blog. I have been posting elsewhere, but not as much as I’d like there either. Right now you may be pointing to www.etzlerhousehold.net. If so, you may want to point your readers to blog.etzlerhousehold.net. I’ll probably be switching things over to something else in the not-so-distant future.

Peace,

Andy

The dirty little secret of optical media

I have run into this issue previously with CDs. I haven’t done much with DVDs as of yet so I haven’t seen this. So watch what you burn and make sure you have other backup options.

My preferred backup option is Windows Home Server. It backs up my desktop and my laptop. I then have important files backed up from the Home Server to an off site location. How are you doing backups? Have you checked your CDs and DVDs to see if they’re still good?

Your important photos and files are all backed up on CDs and DVDs, so you’re safe. Right?

Think again.

SVCHOST.EXE Patch Error

I don’t know if you’ve run into this or not with your patching. As I’ve mentioned before on my Technology blog, we use WSUS in our environment. We have not had too many difficulties with it to this point, and after reading some of the problems that discuss this issue, I’m glad we’re using it. For the few that for some reason or other are not tied into WSUS, I’ve seen this issue three times. Here’s what I’ve done to fix the problem.

1) Boot into safe mode and use system restore to go to a period of time before the patches were applied.

2) Apply the patch from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;927891. Reboot your PC.

3) Upgrade to the newest WSUS Client. You can download it from here.

That’s what worked for me. What’s your experience been?

Office 2007 and Blogging

I haven’t had much opportunity to do much blogging lately. I’ve been quite busy at work as well. And, as I’m sure you’re aware, Lent is now in full swing. I’ve also recently started my own business. It’s called Etzler Technical Services (ETS) LLC and you can read more about it at http://www.etzlertechnicalservices.com. It’s still in the infant stages, but the planning and preparing have taken up most of my spare time.

I wanted to try using Office 2007 to post to this blog. If it works sufficiently, I hope to be a bit more active in blogging. Thanks for your patience.

AVG 7.5 Free Edition released – Download Squad

The download squad points out that there’s a new version of AVG out and about. This is one of the free versions of virus protection that I suggest to home user’s from time to time. The main reasons? It works. It’s free. Will have to try this version out to see if it’s just as good.
